HOW WE STARTED
Aie Serve is youth-lead NGO that started in 2007 to spread the values of Respect, Acceptance, and Love.
The word “Aie” is a Japanese word pronounced as “I” and means “Love”, so the name of NGO is Love to Serve or I Serve others.
The idea came due to the aftermath of July War on Lebanon and the sharp polarization of the Lebanese youth. A group of friends started brainstorming ways of tackling this issue and agreed that the 3 basic values that are missing in Lebanon are Respect, Acceptance and Love. Loving others for who they are, and not which political background or sect they are from, respecting others’ point of views and beliefs no matter what, and accepting differences and considering them the seeds of diversity.
Afterwards, the group started gathering more ideas and people and tried to organize themselves little at a time while focusing on serving their surrounding and society at large.
Aie Serve evolved from a group of friends, to a group of community service minded people, to a team and an organization.

Basmeh & Zeitooneh (B&Z) is a grassroots organization started in 2012 when a group of volunteers in Lebanon, driven by the plight of Syrian refugees, began a small relief operation. Within a year the volunteers had set up their organization as a Lebanese NGO and received their first grant to start three different programs in their community center in Shatila a preexisting Palestinian refugee camp that was hosting Syrian refugees. From these beginnings, B&Z grew at a compound annual growth rate in excess of 50% and became one of the premier local Syrian relief and development organizations. In 2015 a branch was setup in Turkey and in 2017 and 2018 the organization registered fund-raising subsidiaries in the US and UK. In 2019 work was launched in Erbil, Iraq.

Blue Mission is a non-political/non-sectarian NGO based in Saida, Lebanon, seeking to promote a culture of peace on every level of society in order for Lebanon to confront and resolve its humanitarian challenges. We work with vulnerable Lebanese, Refugees and Internally displaced groups in Lebanon, targeting aspects of Medical Aid, Mental Health, Education, Capacity Building and Peace Building.
The biggest program in place at this date is the KARAMA project, targeting refugee and host populations living in informal settlements in the South and Mount Lebanon to assess the mental and physical health needs of their residents, with an emphasis on women and their children. This program reaches around 1000 beneficiaries a month, with the help of a Mobile Medical Unit.
This program is now complemented by the Early Years Education Program. The basis of the program is to provide Early Childhood Education (ECE) to Syrian Refugees who are not entitled to go to school from the ages of 3-5. ECE is one of the most significant programs that can lead to positive lifelong outcomes. As such, it is important to ensure that Syrian Refugees have this service provided for them so when getting to school at the age of 6 they have the skills needed to access appropriate grade level curriculum.
This program takes places in the Library of Saida. It runs 4 days a week (Monday to Thursday), 2h a day. Activities are designed to give the children tools to be more developmentally appropriate, ready to integrate into school by the age of 7, build their social/emotional skills, fine/gross motor skills, and early literacy skills.

The Changemaker Festival has become one of the Middle East’s biggest events for youth and women. This year, it is held in the heart of Downtown Beirut at District//S, on October 5thwhere more than 5,000 millennials from Lebanon and abroad, influencers, CEO’s, executives and youth leaders will gather in one place to explore how entrepreneurship can change the world. In partnership with the Women Leaders Council (WLC), the theme for this year focuses on giving youth and women a platform to empower themselves, to raise their voice, connect, learn from others, be inspired, and build a network and support system. Almost 18% of Lebanese youth are unemployed, and 25% of them won’t find a job in Lebanon. The female employment rate constitutes only 25% in Lebanon, and only 4% of females in the workforce hold a top position in a business or firm. We want to create intrapreneurs, artist-preneurs, and entrepreneurs, to address the regional and global employment crisis. We want to support the local startup ecosystem, build a platform for business leaders, influencers and policymakers to engage youth and women, bringing them into the conversation as the leaders of today, not exclusively the leaders of tomorrow.

CodeBrave was founded in January 2018 starting with a pilot project teaching computer coding and robotics to eight teenagers at a shelter for homeless youth in the Beirut suburbs. We now have 20 students taking up to four classes a week. When young people leave state-run shelters at adulthood, the risk of them ending up back on the street or in exploitative work is high. CodeBrave aims to match this wasted human potential with the global tech skills gap. We train vulnerable youth for jobs of the future, based on the most in-demand skills. Coding and digital skills also open up an online job market to get around the work restrictions on refugees in Lebanon.

Serving the hungry. Salvaging food. Saving lives. FoodBlessed is a local hunger-relief and food-rescue initiative (Reg. Charity #770) aimed at fighting hunger and food waste in Lebanon. We work with the civil society and strategic partners to collect food via organizing soup kitchens, food drives, and fundraiser events; and to recover surplus edible food from events and excess/close-to-expiry products across FMCG and retail companies that would otherwise go to waste. The food collected is then distributed in the form of free meals and food assistance packages to underprivileged communities and local charities. FoodBlessed seeks to raise awareness about sustainable ways of living which make sense economically, morally and environmentally via promoting the concepts of food rescue/recovery, encouraging the adoption of more sustainable farming practice and more equal food distribution schemes both on a national level and international one! The Happy Childhood Foundation aims to make children of the world happier, one smile at a time. We want to help make a difference. We don’t naively believe we will eradicate human misery all by ourselves… but we do believe that one more person fighting for children will change another’s life, and one organization could help thousands more.
And so we set on to develop projects and programs that will make that difference: by focusing on children’s needs, and without any kind of discrimination. We also seek to bring awareness to children’s situation, in Lebanon and around the world, especially with other children.
We help children with any kind of disability receive the therapy care they deserve and need regardless of their situations and backgrounds.
In addition to that, we make sure to cover all their needs in term of basic needs, protection, health, education and recreation.

In light of these alarming results, himaya was founded in 2008 with the notification number 748/2009. The organization has continued to grow, responding to child protection needs on a national level. The dedicated & multidisciplinary team of professionals, covers all Lebanese territory with offices in Mount Lebanon, South Lebanon, North Lebanon and the Bekaa; ensuring accessible services to children across Lebanon. Today, himaya is a specialized NGO in the child protection sector, working to prevent violence against children and offer the support needed for abused children on a psychosocial and legal level; eventually allowing them to be reintegrated as productive and active members of society. In 2018, himaya has become mandated by the Ministry of Justice to handle all legal protection cases in the North Governorate.

Li’s vision stretches beyond permaculture designs and sustainable living. We aim at reestablishing the connection between the culture and habitats we currently live in and the ones we previously cherished before we moved into an excessive and demanding lifestyle. The more we observe that fact, the more we realize that nature does not tolerate excess. Our nature as beings reached a point where it has traded abundance for excess. Infinite growth is destructive, sustainability is balance. We receive by giving, first the luxury of a retreat to raw nature, to learning different concepts (in local communities, schools, researchers. summer campers, practitioners, nature lovers, and curious observers) from organic planting, to harvesting, to eco building, to social responsibility ; A space for workshops/talks, hands-on experience where people can shape ideas, knowledge & skills.Workshops raise curiosity, results create initiative in others, and more results create a trend and then a momentum. We are neither a venture nor a venue, we are somehow collaborators of change, and we are learning that along the way, all channels tend to have an impact directly or indirectly. The project started with a series of workshops hosted by local and international people, starting with vermin-compost toilets to a cob oven, wood working and finally the building of an earth bag dome hobbit houseThe idea was to teach others the process of building one’s own house with minimum cost from limited resources they can acquire from their own land. Smart and simple systems can be installed (passive solar, gray water, rocket mass heater ...) that would allow them to benefit more from nature's abundance as an alternative to investing money and thus time to pay unnecessary bills. Our vision aims at making a difference while interacting with nature, by substituting nature’s exploitation with nature’s appreciation. You are always welcome to stay at ‘Li’ if you are volunteering for roughly five hours a day, depending on what we are working on. (Planting/picking season, eco-building, eco-farming, up cycling furniture …)

What is our aim?
■ Our vision: “Help people help themselves out of homelessness.”
■ Our mission: Among the many social and financial issues that Lebanese people suffer from, the lack of a governmental retirement plan has left countless retired, unable to satisfy their daily needs of nourishment, with barely the remains of a shelter, if none at all.
Our aim is to create a community rather than just a shelter for abandoned people where they are provided with their basic needs (water, food, and a shelter) and then guided (through healthcare, counseling, and skill-building) to re-integrate into society and become active members who contribute to this society.
How do we plan to do so?
1. Give them our time. We visit the homeless every other week on the streets and have dinner with them.
2 . Building the shelters
We are currently working on 2 shelters: Ghedras and Dekwaneh
• The Dekwaneh shelter will consist of 22 rooms and a huge kitchen open to everyone 3 times/week. It is currently in the finishing stage (painting, tiles…)
• The Ghedras shelter will be like a village: It will have 10 small houses (65m2 each) to accommodate the homeless. The next step will be eventually complementing our “village” with activities such as gardening, carpentering, soap-making, mosaic so that the homeless feel productive and subsequently we become a self-sufficient compound.
3. Hiring and recruiting professionals
4. Securing activities and eventually jobs for these individuals

In 2017, we launched a pilot project with the goal of igniting a cultural, environmental, and social movement of change in Lebanon, for the well-being of future generations. We brought artists, painters and graffiti artists who worked day and night to transform Ouzai, a neglected Beirut suburb into a colorful neighborhood, with trendy designs and modern shapes that decorate every wall of every forgotten building in the region. The area was renamed Ouzville and has become today a symbol of hope, happiness and unity; it has also created a sense of patriotism, and a willingness to protect and preserve the environment, all of which attracted worldwide and local media attention.

‘Paint Up!’ is the brainchild of co-founders Lana Chukri and Jubran Elias. After establishing a team of talented and bright designers with whom they graduated with called “Dihzahyners” – the duo brought the team together in 2012 to recreate and rejuvenate broken and gloomy spaces in Beirut through a series of urban and street art initiatives that were later known as “Paint Up!” volumes. In developing this, their social enterprise and non-profit organization was born and began evolving into a living, breathing entity that resonated with artists, enterprises, and people worldwide. The name ‘Dihzahyners’ comes from the dictionary enunciation of the word “designers”. The sole difference is while one is the name of the team; ‘Paint Up’ is the non-profit organization and series of projects that were created by the team themselves. We always like to represent ourselves as ‘Dihzahyners’, even in media and social coverage – as one of our main ideals is that nothing can be built and sustained without a team, as a whole.

The Society for the Protection of Nature in Lebanon – SPNL - is one of Lebanon’s oldest environmental NGOs.
It was first established in 1983, and licensed by the Ministry of the Interior by decision no. 6/AD dated 8/1/1986.
SPNL is the national partner for BirdLife International in Lebanon. It considers birds as entry points for the conservation of wider natural resources, as they act as key indicators of the status and health of ecosystems.
Ever since its establishment in 1986, SPNL has advocated the establishment of protected areas and, in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment, worked to establish protected areas in Lebanon. After two decades of experience working with nature reserves through government agencies, SPNL is now reviving and advocating the Hima, a community based conservation approach that has been prevalent in the Arab region for more than 1500 years.
SPNL has many years of experience in scientific research (mainly avifauna and biodiversity), education and awareness, advocacy and networking, and community development.
As a national environmental NGO in Lebanon, SPNL has contributed a great deal to both raising awareness on environmental issues and concretely protecting natural areas in Lebanon. As a member of the World International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), SPNL helped develop the first biodiversity project in Lebanon, known as the Protected Areas Project.
SPNL also established the Environment Information Center (EIC) that serves as a key resource for the provision of environmental information to students, teachers, and researchers in this field.
As the BirdLife International partner for Lebanon, SPNL is engaged in bird conservation mainly through building capacities of protected areas managers from the whole country on bird identification; through the Important Bird Areas program that aims at identifying sites and habitats essential for bird conservation; and through conservation site action projects.

Launched in early 2017 as an initiative from the Patient Affairs Department at AUBMC, TIES is a volunteering program that aims to connect with the patients and their families, support them through their stay at the Medical Center, shift their attention from sickness, and strengthen their inner power. The main pillars of the initiative are: Trust, Inspiration, Encouragement, and Strength. TIES consists of a group of volunteers committed to making a difference in the stay of AUBMC patients and their families through daily rounds and weekly workshops. Daily rounds: TIES volunteers offer their time to perform daily rounds to help patients and their families overcome the stressful periods. During these rounds, they hand patients and families several types of entertainment resources such as coloring books for adults, magazines, novels, Sudoku, stress balls, playing cards, cross words etc. Patients tend to await those visits as the bond between them and the volunteers becomes so genuine. In addition to daily rounds, TIES started weekly workshops in early 2018. Below is a glimpse of the provided activities: Music workshops: Talented musicians play various instruments, mostly violin, oud, or guitar, while patients and families are gathered in the waiting areas. They also pass by the patients’ bedsides in case they are not able to leave their rooms. Patients often describe these workshops as what helps them most during their stay. Guided Meditation: Guided meditation promotes relaxation by focusing on memories and dreams to shift attention away from a stressful situation to a new image. The workshops are held in the waiting areas and accompanied by soft music. Every workshop begins with a small discussion led by the yoga instructor that encourages the patients and families to ventilate, then they meditate for 40 minutes. At the end of the session, patients often express how their moods improve. Storytelling: A professional storyteller tells cultural stories to patients and families in the waiting areas in a very engaging way. The storyteller captures the attention of the audience and tries to generate some stories from them to boost their memories. Based on the demands of patients who cannot leave their rooms, the storyteller started passing by the patients’ bedsides as well.

To achieve our mission, we invest in Community Services, Youth Empowerment, Women Empowerment, Child Development, and Advocacy programs.

Volunteer for Lebanon was established "to promote, facilitate, and improve volunteering and community service throughout Lebanon." As a hub for volunteering, we seek to link the many initiatives in Lebanon that promote volunteering with each other and provide support to volunteers as well as the organizations, service institutions, schools, universities, companies, and government agencies that recruit, engage, encourage, and support volunteers. Volunteer For Lebanon is non-profit, non-sectarian, non-governmental, with a comprehensive approach to volunteering that serves all the stakeholders in the volunteer eco-system. It received its registration (علم وخبر) from the Ministry of Interior (#2025) on September 29, 2015, as a reconstitution of an earlier organization, the Association for Volunteer Services (AVS). We provide training in volunteer management to organizations, training to companies in corporate volunteering, and training to schools in how to develop effective and comprehensive service programs. We also develop resources on volunteering. One of our major initiatives is National Youth Service Week, a campaign to empower youth ages 5-25 to plan and implement sustainable service projects throughout Lebanon (www.nysw-lebanon.org).
